The great outdoors! The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge released their adorable family portrait on Friday, December 18, and eagle-eyed observers soon noticed a similarity between the latest photo and an old throwback from 1986 of Prince Charles and Princess Diana with their boys.
Kensington Palace confirmed to Us Weekly that Prince William and Kate Middleton's latest family photo will be displayed on their Christmas card. The beautiful outdoor snap, which was taken by photographer Chris Jelf this past October, features the family of four surrounded by abundant fall foliage and greenery.
A cardigan-clad Prince George, 2, wears high-knee socks and laughs beside his mom, who cradles his younger sister, Princess Charlotte, 7 months. The princess looks simply precious in a girly mauve dress and cardigan, while her dad — wearing a navy cardigan — lovingly flanks his family while crouching.
On the grass in front of the family is a bright red toy train that belongs to Prince George and a little shoe that was kicked off by Princess Charlotte.
The sweet holiday snap is somewhat similar to Prince Charles and Princess Diana's family portrait from 1986, which featured young princes William and Harry.

The throwback pic from nearly 30 years ago was also taken outdoors during the autumn season, but there's a distance between Charles and Diana. Each parent stands separate from each other, and each cradles a son in their arms. Prince Harry, then 2, makes a slightly befuddled expression in Charles' arms, while his big brother, then 4, beams with his mom.
Charles and the late Princess of Wales were married from 1981 to 1996. She died in a fatal car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997.
